Online Advanced Certificate in Senior Phase English First Additional Language Teaching
Qualified teachers can now complete an advanced certificate 100% online, in as little as 21 calendar months.
This fully online programme enables teachers to advance their level of learning achievement through increased knowledge, problem-solving exercises, and practical applications. The skills learned can immediately be used in the classroom; completing the Advanced Certificate in Teaching (ACT) also qualifies teachers for possible promotions or better job opportunities.
Students complete the certificate programme 100% online, so there are no travel or contact session requirements and there aren’t any formal exams. A student’s progress is measured through online assessments which are based on the demonstration of methods and procedures to be used in the professional management of learning, within defined contexts.
Applied competencies to meet National Qualifications Framework (NQF) Level 6, are organised into seven consecutive, 10-week modules. These are designed to meet the occupational needs of working teachers, it includes academic tutoring and technological support. Students can enrol and pay for one module at a time.
The Advanced Certificate in Senior Phase English First Additional Language Teaching (Grade 7 to 9) will focus on equipping teachers with the tools required to efficiently teach English and to communicate effectively while implementing information and communication technology in the classroom.
The following are some of the competences which will be developed:
- Application of teaching strategies
- Providing constructive feedback to learners
- Identification and taking action in terms of barriers to learning
- Creative use of resources in the subject classroom

Professional requirements for admission to the programme
Admission to the ACT is subject to the UFS General Rules for Undergraduate Qualifications, Postgraduate Diplomas, Bachelor Honours Degrees, Master’s Degrees, Doctoral Degrees, Higher Doctorates, Honorary Degrees, the Convocation, and the specific requirements of the South Campus and the Faculty of Education at the UFS. The following requirements for prospective students apply. Applicants must be in possession of an approved and recognised professional teaching qualification:
- A three‐year Teacher’s Diploma at NQF Level 5 (e.g. the three‐year College of Education Diploma), or
- A 360‐credit National Professional Diploma in Education (NPDE) at NQF Level 5; or
- A 480‐credit Bachelor of Education (BEd) at NQF Level 7; or
- An applicable Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) or Advanced Diploma at NQF Level 7; or
- An approved and recognised professional teaching qualification evaluated as REQV13.
- Must be a practicing teacher.
- Prospective students must provide proof that they are currently teaching in the selected phase and subject, and have access to an applicable classroom for the duration of the programme.
Technical Requirements
A laptop is compulsory as part of the equipment a student needs for the programme. ICT forms an integral part of the ACT programme.
You will be given the opportunity to buy a laptop through Fundi at an exceptionally competitive price on the Student Technology Programme (STP). Click here for general information.
The laptops purchased through the STP initiative are pre-loaded with the necessary antivirus and processing software. However, purchasing a laptop through Fundi is not compulsory. A student in the ACT programme is free to purchase a laptop from any service provider.
Computer Requirements
The minimum recommended requirements for a laptop or desktop computer to be used in the programme are as follows:
- Intel Core i3 64-bit x86 processor
- 500 GB / 1 TB HDD
- 4GB RAM
- Windows 10 Home or Pro / Apple MacOS
- USB, Bluetooth, Ethernet, Wi-Fi
- 14” HD Display (1366×768)
A tablet or netbook type of portable computer is NOT recommended due to its small size and design, a Chromebook is also not recommended due to it needing to operate mostly online and connected to the internet, it also has limited applications available.

Fees
The ACT online programmes are designed to be affordable, saving time and money when compared to other formats.
Students can enrol and pay for one 10-week session at a time. Payment is accepted through the online portal and must meet the payment deadline.
2020 Pricing
South African students: Pay and enrol at R2,775 per 10-week session.
International students pay an annual levy. The levy amounts are calculated annually.
For students from Lesotho or SADC countries: Pay and enrol at R3,185 per 10-week session.
Students from non-SADC: Pay and enrol at R4,575 per 10-week session.
